  Islam Inherently Antidemocratic?

Social Justice Posted by <Zarathustra> on Wednesday December 19, @02:12PM
from the mosque-populi dept.

The Sept 11 attacks and their aftermath have led to much discussion of the nature of Islam. Several commentators have opined that Islam is naturally anti-modernist and anti-democratic.

There is a good article on this topic in The East Bay Express. It is an interview with Muslim political scientist Agha Saeed, president of the American Muslim Alliance. Saeed discusses the many different reactions to modernity among Muslims, and gives compelling explanations for the rise of fundamentalism over the last 25 years.

An excellent recent book on this topic is The Islamic quest for democracy, pluralism, and human rights by Ahmad S. Moussalli.

Islam is no more antidemocratic/antimodernist than Christianity.

Interesting. Islam was the catalyst for the rise of the West. The cultural flowering and tolerance of the Muslim world, alone, kept the light burning while Europe had fell into the barbarism of the dark ages. It facilitated the renaissance, and subsequent push to our present condition.

“…the natural reaction of a premodern people who have yet to acquire the cultural prerequisites that lead to prosperity: capitalism, democracy, a large middle class, etc. Saeed finds that to be simplistic, to say the least.”

No shit its simplistic. Our current model shouldn't be used as some template for the ideal. Its a flaw and a failure. Capitalism leads to inequality, and democracy in truth keeps self-determinism from the hands of individuals.

“Western democratic theorists have often connected the rise of universal democracy in the West to the Christian tradition that recognizes the inherent
worth of each individual and his or her equality before God.”

How about fuck God, and strive for 'the inherent worth of each individual', and his/her equality before one another.
