  Bond is Back!

Art Posted by <Xnoubis> on Thursday September 21, @04:01PM
from the great-blues-brotherhood dept.

Graham Bond, an important figure in the history of British R&B, turned to Thelema in the last years of his career, recording the two albums “Holy Magick” and “We Put Our Magick on You.” They're filled with Thelemic and Golden Dawn references (check out “Hail Ra Harakhite,” for example), but until recently, have been almost impossible to find. But Donald Michael Kraig points out that they've been re-released together on one CD. A listening experience quite unlike anything else.

So I went ahead and ordered this, and am not sorry. It's interesting. The remaster is nothing short of brilliant – I have no real good idea what the original vinyl sounded like, since I never owned it, but I know in general what vinyl of the period sounded like, and this is a stellar mastering job, crystal clear.

Unfortunately, perhaps, the clarity reveals all the weakness of the performances, where they exist (largely in the horns and backing vocals). Purists may find the pronunciations actively painful – I was able to ignore it once I got used to it.

On the other hand, who could possibly resist “dudu ner af a nuteru, yeeahhh”… ;) Imagine the Gnostic Mass as performed by the cast of Hair, and you have a pretty good idea of what this sounds like. Fun fun fun.
