  Fethullah Gulen

Social Justice Posted by <Xnoubis> on Thursday January 04, @09:02PM
from the sufi-sales dept.

The current issue of the Middle East Review of International Affairs includes a fascinating overview of the career and influence of Fethullah Gulen, a high-profile Turkish Sufi who advocates democracy, tolerance, modernism, and secular government, even while strongly encouraging Islamic values on a personal level. While his teachings may appear rather conservative to those of us accustomed to Sufi writers like Idries Shah or Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, Gulen's carefully crafted message might be just the right vision of Liberal Islam to make a lasting beneficial impact upon the Muslim world.

While there may be something happening to feel good about in Turkey, Salon points out the unhappy developments in Iran over the past year in “Shutting down the Tehran Spring”. I think there's a significant typo, though: the name of Iran's current Supreme Religious Leader is usually spelled “Khamenei,” not “Khomeini.” Khomeini's gone. We just wish Khamenei would disappear.
