The Revival of Speculative Music

The Revival of Speculative Music
Joscelyn Godwin

Musical Quarterly 67 (1982): 373-86.

During the late 1970s I collected everything I could find that linked music with magical, mystical, occult and esoteric ideas. The antique tradition of music as a speculum or mirror of the cosmos provided the blanket term for this field. This article showed how a discipline thought to be long dead had returned in the modern era, with figures such as Rudolf Steiner, Hans Kayser, Marius Schneider, and Ernest McClain. It was later translated into German, Dutch, and Spanish.
